The cabin is on 5.5 acres nestled among pines and aspens on the beautiful Eastern slope of the Sierras, with a beautiful view of a downsloping hillside and valley looking east off the back deck. A seasonal stream winds downhill just south of the cabin.. There are several other homes off the main road, but our cabin has a remote and cozy feel. The cabin is within a mile of the west fork of the Carson River and close to a world of hiking, skiing, bicycling and other outdoor activities, including Lake Tahoe, Heavenly and Kirkwood ski resorts, Hope Valley and Grover Hot Springs. This is a great place for families and friends to unwind and unplug. It is not, however, suitable as a party house. We have a chest full of board games and shelves of books, including nature and hiking books of the area. In the upstairs sleeping loft you will find a couch, a flat screen TV and a selection of movies on DVD. You also may want to bring your favorite DVDs. The cabin is equipped with internet, so you also can access any streaming service you subscribe to. Cell phone service seems to vary by provider. PLEASE NOTE: The cabin comfortably sleeps six – two in the master bedroom and four in the twin beds in the loft, which has its own half-bath. However, for an additional fee of $25/person/night, we can accommodate up to 9 guests: 1 on the couch and 2 in our "tiny cabin" (see pictures 24-26). The tiny cabin is a charming and cozy separate log cabin room suitable mainly as a sleeping area, with a Japanese futon, chair and a battery-powered lamp. Although there is no electricity to the tiny cabin, in cold weather we provide a small electric heater and an extension cord that runs to the main cabin. Bedding, including sheets, pillows and blankets, is provided for all beds in the cabin as well as tiny cabin. The kitchen is a mix of classic and modern, highlighted by the authentic Waterford wood cook stove. It’s beautiful but also takes time and patience, so you will also find a full range of modern cookware and appliances, including two induction cooktops, microwave, large electric skillet, toaster oven, crock pot, coffee maker, electric hot water kettle and many pots, pans and iron skillets, and a dishwasher. There is also a large BBQ grill and picnic table outside. Refrigerator and full-size washer/dryer are readily accessible behind wooden doors in the kitchen. The bathroom has a large, very comfy bathtub with a hand-held shower. People with physical limitations should take care when entering or leaving the tub. The cabin has central heating to keep you warm, with a wall-mounted thermostat.

We both have lived in this unique and peaceful part of the Sierras not far from Lake Tahoe for over 36 years, and when we met 24 years ago and were searching for a piece of property on which to build our dream home, friends would ask us where our favorite location was. It was always Alpine County, and more specifically, a stretch of the West Fork of the Carson River which meanders through the famous old Ace Hereford Ranch. Miraculously, in 2001 a small 20-acre section of the ranch became available, complete with an old rambling Cliff May ranch house badly in need of repair. After purchasing our dream-come-true, concurrently with the restoration process, we began building a cottage near the main house for our retired parents. The property is resplendent with willow and wild rose thickets providing a protective home for quite literally hundreds of California Quail as well as the occasional Mt. Quail and elusive Chukkar. It wasn't long before the site became affectionally known as Quail Hollow. The cozy cottage was built in the Arts and Crafts style by local friends and craftsmen, utilizing green materials and local stone. The numerous windows in every room welcome the rising sun in the East and take full advantage of the awe-inspiring view of the Carson River and the stunning volcanic basalt cliffs beyond. The kitchen, living room, dining nook and reading nook are all part of a spacious yet comforting great room which invites conversation and comraderie. The sleeping areas are quiet and comforting, the patios soothing and restful. The local wildlife which may include bobcat, raccoon, beaver, wild turkeys and muskrat often saunter past the dining nook window, and of course the ever-present quail and hummingbirds appreciate an occasional handout, the former showing off their adorable families of tiny 'quailets' throughout the summer months. Bald and Golden Eagle soar overhead, Jays nest in the nearby pines and Cliff Swallows build their mud colonies on the cliffs. A peaceful presence can always be found here, whether the Autumn colors have begun to dazzle, a dusting of fresh snow is on the ground or when the summer-blooming lavender is ahum with bees, as the sounds of the city and the pressures of everyday life are left far behind. Come rest your spirit here, explore the area, paint a landscape, work on the story you started to write, bring several favorite books to read, and return home refreshed and rejuvenated.

Our home is very relaxing and situated on 5 acres on a sunny mesa overlooking the Carson Valley and with a view toward the forested foothills and beyond to the Sierra Crest. Plenty of hiking, fishing, hot springs, skiing, casino, kayaking, and biking activities are nearby. We have 4 desk/work spaces in the home. One desk in the kitchen with a new desk chair, 2 desks in the sitting room with monitors/keyboards/mice, and our so-called "quaranteening" room in the garage with a standing desk and monitor and keyboard plus bonus space for 2 kids to do art. The MAX occupancy of the house is 10 people (not including infants.) Exceeding this limit will result in loss of deposit and a negative guest review. We always come to the house with big plans and end up spending our time relaxing on the back porch or in the living room admiring the views, making a big meal in the huge kitchen with our friends and heading to bed early for a great, quiet night of sleep to recharge! I've been going to the Sierra for ~20 years now and am happy to share what I know about it. Our house is on a large 5 acre lot with lots of space to stretch out in and away from the congestion in South Lake Tahoe. We are 23 miles from Kirkwood Ski Resort, 21 miles from Heavenly Ski Resort's Stagecoach lift, and 9-13 miles from the Markleeville/Grover Hot Springs area & 26 miles from South Lake Tahoe. Our home is at 5400' elevation so you may feel the elevation a bit as well, especially if you go for a walk on Sunrise Trail. Trips to the eastern Sierra and Yosemite National Park are also possible as long day drives with the house as your base. Please note the fourth work space is in the garage so it is more exposed to the elements and little critters. Mike PS Also please note that the house has many amenities (cribs, high chairs, strollers, & changing tables for little ones included that may lighten your packing load for your visit.) HOUSE AMENITIES We have a nice big flat lawn in the front and back of the house (sometimes it's green depending on our sprinkler system temperament :-)). There's a nice space to lounge/play outside as well as porches on the back and front of the house. This is a desert area and is very dry and windy. The house is also convenient for parents with a separate bunk bedroom with a TV and 3 high chairs, 1 full size crib, 1 mini crib, 2 bassinets, 1 infant swings, double and single stroller. WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO GO Please note the grocery stores/Walmart/Hardware Stores in Gardnerville (20-30 minutes away) are quite extensive (ex: we've bought silver noodles and crab legs there), so no need to truck stuff up there unless you want to or don't want to drive to the grocery stores. We have 3 different pairs of cross-country skis that anyone is welcome to use. The last sizable grocery store (Safeway) on the way up from the bay area is near Martell Rd. near Jackson. There is also a Lowe's and KMart in Martell as well. You will have even more selection if you drive 30 minutes to Carson City which has just about every store you could ask for. The house is out in the middle of nowhere, but that's part of what is great about it. Hope Valley is 15 minutes away and beautiful and a great place to start for level hikes. There is a hot springs above Markleeville with some nice short hikes as well. If you want something more adventurous I can recommend those as well and we have all our hiking books up there (Mt. Tallac and Desolation Wilderness are 2 classic hard Lake Tahoe hikes). The views are pretty nice even outside the house and the roads are very quiet so just a stroll outside on Sunrise Trail is rewarding. We are ~20 minutes from Caples Lake where they rent kayaks, Lake Tahoe is about 30 minutes, and Carson River is just across the road. There is a movie theater in the nearest town of Minden/Gardnerville about 25 minutes away. The Eastern Sierra is ridiculously beautiful and Mono Lake, Yosemite Tioga Pass entrance, Mammoth, Bridgeport, Bodie, Bear Valley, Sonora Pass are all doable as day trips from the house with 1-2 1/2 hours of driving 1-way. The fall colors in October can be striking with snow covering the mountain tops and yellow aspen trees. Northern Lake Tahoe resorts are 1-2 hrs. away. In Gardnerville, we can recommend Overland Pub for a better meal and Woodett's Diner for a traditional diner breakfast. WEATHER During the winter it may get as cold as 0-10 degrees at night. Our house is at ~5400' elevation. We generally don't get pounded by 3+ feet of snow like Tahoe itself during the winter, but you may wake up to a 1 or 2 foot snowstorm during the bad storm weekends. The county plows the road, but may take some time to get to the local street.
